English Writing is perceived as a significant criteria in English that can evaluate whether students have the ability of learning and using English proficiently.At the beginning of October 2016,Zhejiang Province,as an experimental province of comprehensive reform of the college entrance examination,used a new writing type of summary writing.The new type of summary writing not only examines the students' ability to accurately analyze the important information and generalize the main idea of the text,but also examines the students' ability to obtain the structure of the text,ability of logical thinking and comprehensive language.It also fully embodies the spirit of curriculum standards.But the students are unfamiliar with the summary writing,they lack the understanding of the macro structure and the logical relationship of article.Students are facing many difficulties.In order to improve the quality of students' summary writing,the emphasis is on developing their ability of textual coherence and cohesion.The present study combines with specific teaching practice to help students improve their textual sense and improve the quality of textual summary through the teaching of cohesion theory.Based on the cohesion theory proposed by Halliday and Hasan,since then,a great number of experts and scholars from abroad and home have studied the cohesion theory in detail.Thanks for that,they have pushed the theory ahead greatly.However,combining cohesion theory with English summary writing,and applying it to the teaching of English summary writing,it is relatively few to adopt experimental method to improve students' English summary writing level.The main question of the paper: ? How to apply cohesion theory to the teaching of English summary writing? ?Can the application of cohesion theory to the teaching of English summary writing improve the students' level of summary writing? The research is based on the related researches on the application of cohesion theory in the teaching of English summary writing.After the full discussion on the theoretical basis of the present studies which are from home and abroad,the hypothesis was proposed that theteaching of cohesion theory can help to improve the scores in English summary writing.With the purpose of exploring the current situation of cohesion theory in teaching of English writing,the author made a questionnaire investigation for the students in grade1 in a senior high school in Zaozhuang city.According to the experimental results in pre-test and post-test,the author holds that the teaching of cohesion theory is a good way to improve the students' English summary writing competence.During the course of the experiment,the students in the experimental class were asked to do a summary writing exercise on the same article,and the senior English teachers in the senior high school were asked to correct the summary writing of the students in pre-test and post-test according to the evaluation standards of summary writing.Using SPSS 19.0 to analyze the data,the results show that there are significant differences in experimental class between pre-test and post-test,and the quality of the post-test summary writing is significantly higher.At the end of the paper,the author draws a conclusion from the experimental result that it would be conducive to enhance their English writing competence when the students learn more textual cohesion and cohesion theory in class.In the meanwhile,The author puts forward some suggestion and illustrates the limitation and deficiency of this research.
