In this stage of high school English learning,English learners should not only pay attention to the skills of speaking and listening,but also keep an eye on the skills of writing and reading.High school English composition requires brevity and shortness,usually in the range of 100 to 200 words.If the transition between sentence and sentence,paragraph and paragraph is not smooth,it will largely affect coherence and cohesion of the passage.As an important way of coherence,cohesion has a great impact on the quality of the discourse.It is one of the most important tasks for teachers and learners to use cohesion properly and produce coherent discourse in English writing.On the basis of previous studies,it finds that the relevant researches on cohesion mainly focus on the group of college students,while the researches on senior high school students are less involved.This study focuses on three issues:(1)What is the specific situation of the usage of cohesion in English compositions of different genres in senior high school?(2)What is the specific relationship between the cohesion and the quality of students' writing of different genres in senior high school?(3)What is the matter with the application of cohesion in senior high school students' writing?In this study,164 questionnaires were collected from a senior high school in Huaibei.Take a collection of 128 samples of English composition.After analysis of data,the result shows that:1)The most frequently used cohesion in senior high school students' English writing are reference?conjunction and lexical cohesion,but substitution and ellipsis are underutilized.2)There are obvious differences between argumentative writing and practical writing in the usage of cohesion in students' English writing.3)There is a certain correlation between the number of cohesion and high school students' writing scores.The more cohesion they use in the composition,the higher scores they will get.The result shows that although students can use cohesion in their writing,they will avoid using or misuse some cohesion,such as ellipsis.Therefore,it suggests that teachers should effectively guide students to write and gradually improve students' writing ability,such as improving students' awareness of discourse and developing their sensitivity to cohesion and coherence,emphasizing the differences of different styles,expanding students' reading range,and strengthening the usage of relevant cohesion in exercises of writing.
