A Study Of Hu Shi's Image Before And After May 4th Movement

Hu Shi is a pivotal figure in the modern history of China.Before the May 4th Movement in1917,he gained a reputation for being national mentor.For a long time,Hu Shi was not only the authority in the academic community,but also the influential political speaker.He was born to cherish his reputation.As a teenager,shaping his own image firstly came into his mind.During his stay in the United States,he had already set his own future identity.After the May4 th Movement,Hu Shi frequently stepped into politics as a scholar,which resulted in the complexity in his images.Since then Hu Shi has been criticized by both politicians and academic groups.With the change of social environment and political situation,sometimes Hu Shi was considered as “comrades” while sometimes as “counter-revolutionaries”.The scholars with similar academic ideas to Hu Shi would follow his lead while for those who had different idea would make every effort to ridicule Hu Shi.During this period,Hu Shi himself also used various measures to shape himself and maintained his self-image.The three kinds of images displayed by political circles,academic circles and himself interweave with each other,which reflecting all kinds of images of Hu Shi standing at the forefront of the times.The first chapter introduces the image of Hu Shi before the May 4th Movement.The first section introduces Hu Shi's definition on his early years' image,which mainly covers Hu Shi ' s personal image during the period of school studying,studying in Shanghai,and studying in the United States.The second section mainly introduces images of Hu Shi defined by his close friend and friend of the same period.As a result,it also reflects the differences as for the image of Hu Shi.The second chapter mainly analyzes the image changes of Hou Shi over the period of the May4 th Movement.The first section analyzes Hu Shi's understanding and positioning for his own image from the two fields,namely politics and academics.In the second section,it mainlytalks about the opinions on Hu Shi ' s image from political figures,academic celebrities including Hu Shi's students.Then from the media's point of view,the image of Hu Shi was reviewed again.The third chapter is the analysis of Hu Shi's image construction and change.The first section discusses Hu Shi's measures to construct his self-image.The second section analyzes the reasons and changes of Hu Shi 's self-perceived image.In the third section,the political circles are used as the category to analyze the reasons and changes of Hu Shi's image recognition.
