| Philip Larkin,a famous English poet,is one of the most influential poets in the twentieth century. This translation practice is selected from Jill, one of Larkin’s two novels, which describes the everyday college life of Oxford University so as to reflect the different situation of society and worldly wisdom in post-war Britain.Text typology theory, put forward firstly by Katharine Reiss,a representative of German functionalist school, upholds that the translation shall be conducted according to the type, style and function of the original text.Later on,"semantic translation" and "communicative translation",advanced by Peter Newmark,a British translation theorist, believes that there are many types of text, and various translation strategies are encouraged to be used in translation process flexibly according to different text. There is no Chinese version of this novel,so the translator makes an analysis on the translation of 10000 words selected from over 30000 words in her translation practice. In this translation, text typology theory of Newmark is taken as the theoretical framework. With regard to those difficulties at lexical level, the author adopts different translation methods such as diction of specific word, conversion of part of speech and adaptation.Difficulties met at syntactic level are solved by adopting conversion of voice, amplification of supplementary information, division of long sentence and restructuring of incoherent sentence.Through practice and research,it is concluded that text typology theory has great reference values and plays a positive role in guiding the translation of literary works. |
