After entering the 20 th century, the United States has gradually gained strength and has begun to transition from a world economic power to a world political power. The solid material foundation has allowed the United States to set foot in other parts of the world. The First World War was an important period for the United States to change its diplomatic strategy. The United States has evolved into a world leader in the minds of American government decision-makers who were not involved in European affairs and disputes before, but now they are ready to join the international competition.Although the composition and evolution of the foreign policy of the Austria-Hungarian Empire in the United States is not the core content of the war,it is also an indispensable part of it,affecting the process and the final outcome of the war.It also serves as an example to show the essence of Wilson's foreign policy.Prior to World War I,due to the influence of traditional isolationism and the differences in the geographical location, cultural traditions and political systems between the United States and the Auatria-Hungary,the contacts between the two countries were very limited. After the outbreak of the European war,the United States pursued a “moderate”foreign policy toward Austria-Hungary,whose purpose was to separate the German-Australian alliance from the collapse, weaken the strength of the allies, win the war as quickly as possible and increase the United State's international prestige. However, the United States' foreign policy has always taken the interests of its own country as its starting point, and will not make any compromise on the issue of principle to Austria-Hungary.Austria-Hungary intends to reduce diplomacy pressure from the United States through diplomatic efforts and prevent the United States from inflicting greater threat on the allies. However, due to its limited strength,it cannot change German foreign policy and it cannot restore its former status and prestige through war.Ultimately, the United States intervened in the war and supported the foreign policy of dismembering Austria-Hungary.In the Paris Peace Conference, the Wilson government signed the “Saint-Germain Peace Treaty” that was harsh to Austria-Hungary.Looking at the Wilson's government's foreign policy toward Austria-Hungary,we can draw the conclusion that in the name of “democracy”,“rights” and “national self-determination”,the United States seeks to maximise its own practical interests, embodying both idealism and reality. The organic combination of the doctrines enables the two to serve American national interests perfectly. It also reflects the unique characteristics and essence of U.S.diplomacy.The main purpose of Wilson's government for the Austria-Hungary policy is the US's own interests and its goal of acting as a world leader. Its foreign policy is deeply influenced by American traditional culture and has obvious“Wilsonism” features.
