Textbooks of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language(TCFL)are the direct objects and the main tools for teachers to teach and students to learn in classes.Reasonable forms and definitions of new words are beneficial to learners' learning and teachers' teaching.Vocabulary is important but difficult.Its importance in the textbook is self-evident.Effective interpretation of new words can guarantee the quality of teaching materials and thus ensure the quality of teaching.Researches on the interpretation of vocabulary in TCFL textbooks are widely carried out on many aspects,but none of them involve the meta-language of interpretation,which is part of the study of meta-language.This article holds that the meta-language of interpretation is the language,symbol,diagram,etc.used to explain the interpretation of a word.Many scholars have already obtained fruitful results in the interpretation of meta-language.However,the study of meta-language of interpretation mainly focuses on the dictionary,and rarely involves other carriers,such as TCFL textbooks.The study of the meta-language of interpretation on vocabulary in TCFL textbooks needs to be further improved.In view of this,based on Boya Chinese(Second Edition),we carry out the research on vocabulary interpretation of TCFL comprehensive textbooks from the perspective of the meta-language of interpretation.This thesis consists of six chapters.The first chapter is the introduction and literature review.It explains the objectives,tasks,methods and the significance of the topic.Chapter 2 analyzes the vocabulary items of the Boya Chinese from the aspects of preparation of explanations,quantity.grades,etc..The content of the new words involved in the compilation of the textbook,should cover the level of users,the objectives of learning the material,the basis for the selection of new words,the arrangement and characteristics of new words and other aspects.According to the statistical analysis of the vocabulary,there are 6,670 new words in Boya Chinese,and the number of new words in the four-phase textbooks gradually increases.The teaching materials in different stages are divided into ?,?(?)volumes,and the volume of new words in ?-to-? volumes is also gradually increasing,reflecting the connectivity.The average number of each class also presents increasing tendency,which is suitable for the learners' demand for more new words.In the aspect of words'grades,the vocabulary of the textbook covers few of the A,B,C,and D-class words in the Outline of Chinese Vocabulary and Chinese Characters Level,mainly because of different basis,target and scope of the words.At the same time,we should strictly control the number and proportion of the superclass words and improve the interpretation of the words.Chapter 3 examines the interpretation languages of the textbooks.There are two kinds of languages(English and Chinese),which are arranged in three ways:Chinese only,English only,and English-Chinese mixed.From the primary to the advanced level,different proportion is found on different levels of textbooks.The interpretation languages change from mainly English to mainly Chinese.Chapter 4 analyzes the basic interpretation in the vocabulary.From the perspectives of phonetic annotation,part-of-speech tagging,pragmatic interpretation,morphological tagging,the word frame of interpretation,bracket interpretation,and additional structures of interpretation,it is recommended that editors pay attention to the problems of tagging and accuracy of concurrent words.Chapter 5 studies the collocation and example sentences provided in the vocabulary.On the basis of the phrase structure,the collocations in the vocabulary can be divided into free collocation,semi-fixed collocation,and fixed collocation.Additionally,there are collocations of the Split Words,misuses and analogies.Example sentences include simple sentences and complex sentences,sentence groups,dialogues,and other forms.The rich examples would help learners to master new words more accurately.However,there are problems in terms of format uniformity and normativeness.It is recommended that editors correct them.Chapter 6 discusses the learners' psychological expectations and need of the meta-language of interpretation in the vocabulary through questionnaires.Their need may not be scientific,but ignoring their expectations or needs will inevitably affect the effectiveness of learning and teaching.Due to the limitation of the scope of the survey,most of the subjects of this research are Korean students.The conclusion is universal and needs to be tested.However,it has reference value because it is a case study for the compilation and teaching of textbooks.
