| For a long time,the overseas propagation of Chinese traditional literature and culture has not been satisfying.In contrast,the website wuxiaworld.com has attracted lots of English readers for its translation of Chinese online novels since its establishment in 2014,which especially deserves to be concerned and studied.So this dissertation focuses on its translation activities,attempts to analyze the reasons for its successful acceptance overseas from the aspects of its translation operation,translation materials selection,as well as translation strategy,which may contribute to the overseas translation and introduction of Chinese non-classical literature and even the Chinese culture.Guided by the theoretical perspectives of Professor Xie Tianzhen’s Medio-Translatology and combined with the Lasswell model of communication studies,this dissertation is a descriptive research about the translation activities of the website wuxiaworld.com based on certain data and detailed analysis.The dissertation contains four chapters.Chapter One briefly introduces its research origin and research questions,literature review,theoretical perspective,research methodology and research significance.Chapter Two is the description and analysis of the website’s translation operation including its translators and acceptance.Chapter Three describes and analyzes the website’s translation materials selection,trying to find out the factors that affect the actual translation materials selection.Chapter Four discusses the general translation view of the website,its translation of books’ and people’s name,its actual translation of terminology,its addition and omission in translation as well as the cover change of some novels in translation to explore the website’s translation strategy.Through the research,what can be found is that the website,based on its readers’ reading demands,chooses the Chinese online fantasy novels as its main translation materials.Besides the fiction genre,the translation material of the website is influenced by the translator’s interest in the novel and translation skills,the othertranslators,the writer as well as the original Chinese website.The accurate master of its readers’ reading interest is the foundation of the website’s successful acceptance overseas.In addition,most translators of the website are native English speakers.Without professional translation training,most translators have great interest in the Chinese online fantasy novel for various reasons.The website recruits its translators in a strict way,and general readers could become its formal translators as long as their translations are excellent enough,which helps ensure the quality of its translation.Last but not least,compared with the traditional univocal translation strategy,the website mixes domestication translation strategy with foreignizing translation strategy,according to its general view of translation,its translation of books’ and people’s name,its actual translation of terminology,the addition and omission in translation as well as the translation of the novel covers.The website,with the help of Internet,chooses proper translation material,translators and translation strategy based on its readers’ reading interest and expectation to succeed in attracting more English readers,which could offer a good example for Chinese non-classical literature’s and even the Chinese culture’s spread overseas in the future. |
