Huang Shen,a representative artist of Yangzhou Painting Faction,was famous for his poetry,painting and calligraphy.In the middle Qing Dynasty,the stele study was prevailing while the cursive script was waning.In this background,Huang Shen was unique for his cursive script with distinctive characteristics.The unique interest represented in his strokes and ink,the new and fresh script,and his active exploration on blending painting elements into calligraphy showed that while emphasizing the inner beauty of the art,Huang Shen didn’t follow the trend and dared to create his own style.His cursive script was not only unique in the middle and late Qing Dynasty,but has an important position in the history of Chinese calligraphy.However,his calligraphy has long been covered up for his big fame in painting and his position in calligraphy has been neglected because some historians of calligraphy focus on stele study.This paper attempts to show Huang Shen’s significance in the history of Chinese calligraphy and reassess the historic positioning of his achievement in the art of cursive script through a demonstration of the innovation of Huang’s cursive script,in order to make a contribution to the study of the calligraphy,cursive script,Literati paintings history of the Qing Dynasty and the evolution and development of regional calligraphy and painting history. |
