The compositions of Swiss composer Frank Martin were known for contrapuntal technique,variety of colors and musical characters.Martin's music was sensitive and cantabile under the influence of late romantic.Later,he was inspired by Arnold Schoenberg and Twelve-tone music.Martin created his own style by incorporating partial twelve-tone elements into his music without abandoning tonality.Also,the use of Basso continuo and Basso ostinato made him especially unique in his period.Martin composed a series of six ballades for various solo instruments with piano or orchestra,the Ballade for Flute and Piano is one of the essential flute repertoires.This three-chapter research provides an analysis of the Ballade for Flute and Piano.The first chapter deals with the history background of the piece and the life of the composer.The second chapter is a detail composition analysis.And the third chapter discusses performance practice issues,gives suggestions and advices from own experience.
