Vocabulary occupies an important position in the process of English teaching.Only by mastering the vocabulary can it be more effective to promote the development of four aspects of listening, speaking, reading and writing.Different scholars hold different views on how to teach vocabulary. There are two representative ways: one is the explicit vocabulary teaching method, the other is the implicit vocabulary teaching. Some scholars believe that individual words should be paid attention.teachers should explain and practice the vocabulary itself and support the explicit vocabulary teaching. Some researches support implicit vocabulary teaching. It is believed that vocabulary teaching should rely on context, and teachers should guide students to read extensively and guess vocabulary on the premise of understanding the purpose of the article.Even though the two methods have advantages, they have their own shortcomings. So the scholars propose a new teaching method that integrates the two methods. There is a lot of research on the effectiveness of the integration of explicit and implicit vocabulary instruction, but the main object of their research is college students. While the literature on the role of vocabulary in junior high school students' English learning is not rich,so it is imperative to do this research. The purpose of this paper is to explore the three research issues through the experimental study of two classes in grade eight for two months:Question 1: Can integration of explicit and implicit vocabulary teaching better improve the students' test scores compared with the explicit vocabulary teaching?Question 2: Does the integration of explicit and implicit vocabulary teaching exert different effect on receptive vocabulary knowledge and the productive vocabulary knowledge?Question 3: What is the students' attitudes towards the integration of explicit and implicit vocabulary instruction in junior high school? The participants of this study were two classes students of Minxian Shendu middle school in Dingxi City,Gansu Province,52 in each class. One class is the experimental class, the teacher teaches vocabulary through the integration of explicit and implicit teaching instruction. In the experimental class, the teacher not only provides students with context, let the students guess meaning based on understanding the general idea, and uses direct vocabulary instruction. The other class is the control class, which teaches vocabulary through explicit teaching methods, that is,the teacher explains the vocabulary directly. After two months' experiment, the teacher conducted post-test tests in the experimental class and the control class respectively, and conducted a questionnaire survey on the students in the experimental class and control class.Through the collection and analysis of the data, this study draws the following conclusions:First, the integration of explicit and implicit vocabulary teaching can better improve the students' English test scores compared with the explicit vocabulary teaching.Second, the integration of explicit and implicit vocabulary instruction can not only help the students memorize receptive vocabulary, but also help them use productive vocabulary.Thirdly, students in the experimental class hold a positive attitude towards the integrative method and expect to be taught by the integrative method. To sum up,the integration of explicit and implicit vocabulary instruction is effective for junior high school students to learn English vocabulary,so teachers should make full use of this method when they teach vocabulary.
