A Practical Report On The 2017 Seminar On Chinese Culture And Practical Chinese For Officials From Jamaica:An Application Of Translation Variation Strategies In The C-E Consecutive Interpretation

The variation in interpretation can be found in interpretation activities.Translation variation theory expounds the nature of translation variation,accurately defines translation variation as an activity aimed at deriving the relevant contents of the original version by using the appropriate adaptions such as expansion,deletion,editing,commentary,condensation,combination,and reformation.Later,translation variation strategies became popular among the translators and interpreters and became an important way to improve the quality of the translation.This report is based on the translation variation strategies.This foreign-aid training program,2017 Seminar on Chinese Culture and Practical Chinese for Officials from Jamaica,was operated by the Ministry of Commerce of P.R.C.,and was held by Beijing International Chinese College which invited 20 officials from Jamaican government.As a volunteer,the author was engaged in the interpretation work of the seminar.While,in this report,the author laid the emphasis on the Chinese to English part.The author confronted several kinds of problems such as the translation of the culture-loaded words,parallel structures and complex sentences,as well as the speaker’s redundancy.The author mainly adopted three coping variation strategies which are expansion,reformation and editing in dealing with the problems in the hope of giving some references to the further study of the variation strategies in interpretation activities.
