A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of The History Of Cycling In Fifty Bikes(Chapters 25-33)

Bicycles are a very common mechanical device in daily life.There has been more than two centuries since the birth of the first bicycle.However,there are few books on the market giving a comprehensive introduction to the history of bicycles.As a result,it is very meaningful and necessary to study the development of cycling in history.Commissioned by Qingdao Publishing House,the book The History of Cycling in Fifty Bikes has been translated by a five-person team led by Hou Jian,an associate professor at SFL of Henan University.The original text includes more than 60,000 words and discusses the history of cycling with a focus on 50 kinds of bicycles,including their structures and some interesting stories.Through the analysis of translation materials and translation cases,the report focuses on how to enhance the interestingness and legibility while translating science texts.Guided by the schema theory,this paper analyzes the translation process in terms of the two stages of understanding and expressing.Regarding the understanding stage,the paper analyzes the mistakes made in the initial draft,and concludes that the translator must use the dictionary,search the background information of the source text,have a correct understanding of the vocabulary,grammar,and collocations in the source text so as to activate and enrich the translator's own schemata and avoid mistranslations.At the expressing stage,first of all,the author translates from the reader's point of view,using literal translation and transliteration to accurately express bicycle-related professional terms and bicycle names,thus activating the readers' language schema;besides,four-Chinese-character structures are adopted to make the translation closer to Chinese readers and the translation methods of conversion of parts of speech,repetition,separation and combination to enrich readers' language schema.Second,the author applies domestication strategy to activate readers' content schema.In order to activate readers' formal schema,the author of this paper,while translating,pays attention to voice conversion,the use of rhetoric and sentence logic and applies the translation methods of amplification,omission and unpacking.In the end,the author uses literal translation with annotations to help readers establish new schemata.
