Verb ’Take Off’’s Meaning And Antonymy

This paper is aimed to study the verb "take off",by specifically analyzing the multiple meanings of the word and the antonym of each meaning.Many words have many meanings."Take off" is one of them and and each has a corresponding opposite meaning.So the verb "take off" has many antonyms.In English,a mere word "wear" can express the meanings of "wear clothes","wear hats","wear socks",and "wear gloves"which in the Korean language different expressions should be used.However,they all have the same antonym.That is the verb "take off".The words in the above examples are based on dressing verbs.However,the verb "take off" has many denotations.In the extended meanings,there are different antonyms,which will be illustrated in this paper.According the theory of meaning,antonymy is established upon a certain benchmark.When only one of the features of two words is different and all other ones are the same,the antonym relationship will be established.This paper first explores the previous studies focused on the verb"take off",and then analyzes its basic meaning together with denotations and studies the corresponding antonyms.
