A Report On English-Chinese Translation Of Lisbon Tourist Brochure

With the development of society and the improvement of people's living standards,tourism maintains a momentum of vigorous growth,and more and more Chinese people go traveling abroad.Tourist brochures are not only helpful for tourists to obtain more travel information,but also beneficial to tourist attractions to absorb more public attention and attract more tourists.Therefore,the translation of tourist brochures is essential to both the tourists and tourist attractions.This report is based on the translation of Lisbon Tourist Brochure assigned by a translation company.The focus of the report is to explore how Andrew Chesterman's Norm Theory can help and guide the translator to complete the translation process and improve the quality of target texts.Chesterman divides translation norms into expectancy norms and professional norms,the latter of which is further divided into the accountability norm,communication norm and relation norm.By applying Norm Theory to the analysis of the translation of tourist brochure,the author draws the following conclusions.First,a translator shall get to know that its readers have expectations of grammaticality,acceptability and appropriateness towards the translation.Next,during the translation process,the translator shall shoulder corresponding responsibilities in the assessment,translation and review phases.Third,the translator shall endeavor to optimize communication between the original text and target readers.Finally,the translator shall maintain an appropriate relation of relevant similarity between the target text and the source text.Moreover,in the translation process,the translation strategies proposed by Chesterman should be used flexibly to conform to the translation norms.
