A Report On The Translation Of The Law Of The Republic Of Lithuania On National Conscription

The Law of the Republic of Lithuania on National Conscription is a typical legislative document and its content involves many aspects of the conscription system in Lithuania.For legal professionals,this conscription law is of great value and significance.Having a understanding of and doing research on the Law of the Republic of Lithuania on National Conscription helps to promote the communication and cooperation between China and Lithuania in the legal field.Working as an intern translator,the author accepted the translation work of the Law of the Republic of Lithuania on National Conscription and was responsible for the whole translating process.This translation report is based on the translation practice.This translation report includes five chapters.Chapter one gives a brief introduction to the translation task.Chapter two describes the whole process of task completion which includes four parts:preparations,translating,text-proofing and feedback.Chapter three first introduces the basic content,discourse structure as well as the language style of the Law of the Republic of Lithuania on National Conscription and then analyses the similarities and differences of language features in English and Chinese legislative documents through conducting a comparative study on the source text and the Military Service Law of the People’s Republic of China.Chapter four first briefly introduces the functional equivalence theory put forward by Nida and then makes a concrete analysis of its application in the translation practice from two main aspects:lexical equivalence and syntactical equivalence.Chapter five gives a conclusion and elaborates the reflection on this translation work.This translation report puts particular emphasis on the feasibility and practicality of functional equivalence theory in guiding the translation practice of legislative documents,and it also stresses and summarizes the similarities and differences between Chinese and English legislative language.During the process of translating this legislative text,the author has comprehended how to make flexible and appropriate translation strategies according to the characteristics and requirements of legislative language under the guidance of functional equivalence theory so as to accurately convey the information or messages of the source language in the translated text.The author hopes that this translation report can provide valuable enlightenment and reference to language learners,translation researchers as well as other translators engaging in the translation work of English legislative documents.
