Job burnout is a kind of occupational stress, and teachers are in the high risk of job burnout.Teacher burnout not only does harm to the physical and mental health of teachers, but also has a significant negative impact on the development of students.Novice teachers who have just embarked on work positions are prone to burnout because of their failing to change their status, roles and responsibilities, resulting in the loss of talented teachers. At present, the majority of domestic research is directed at English teacher burnout in urban areas, and the study of English teacher burnout in rural areas is rare and not in deep.It is more urgent and meaningful to study the current situation and causes of novice English teacher burnout in rural middle schools. The study tries to investigate the following four questions:(1)Do the novice English teachers suffer teacher burnout in rural middle schools? If they do,what's the overall situation of novice English teachers in rural middle schools?(2)Is there any difference on job burnout among novice English teachers in rural middle schools in terms of gender, marital status, head teacher, academic background, monthly income, workload, and self-efficacy?(3)Is there a relationship between novice English teacher burnout and job stress in rural middle schools? If there is,how's the relationship?(4)What are the causes of novice English teacher burnout in rural middle schools? This paper took 123 novice English teachers in Jiangxi Province as a sample, conducting a questionnaire and individual interviews to study the teacher burnout. The questionnaire in this paper is revised based on the Maslach Burnout Inventory Educator Survey(MBI-ES,1986).Scales are divided into four dimensions including emotional failure, depersonalization, reduced personal accomplishment and knowledge depletion.Through the analysis tool SPSS19.0,the following results are obtained:Generally speaking, the teacher burnout of novice English teacher in rural middle schools is not serious, but some novice English teachers do have teacher burnout. In terms of demographic factors, there is no difference between novice English teacher burnout and gender, marriage, whether the head teacher, academic background. However, teacher burnout of novice English female teachers is slightly higher than that of the novice English male teachers.Besides, burnout of married English teachers is slightly higher than that of the unmarried English teachers. In terms of workload and self-efficacy,both of them have significant differences between teacher burnout. The heavier the workload, the higher the teacher burnout. The higher the self-efficacy,the lower the teacher burnout. In addition, there is a positive correlation between teacher burnout and job stress of teachers. The higher the job stress, the higher the teacher burnout.Among the four dimensions of teacher burnout, the emotional exhaustion dimension has the greatest influence on job stress. The study shows that there are mainly four factors contributing to the novice English teacher burnout in rural middle schools.Namely, social factor(low social status and income),school factor(unreasonable promotion and management mechanisms),teacher factor(poor adaptation and low sense of self-fulfillment)and student factor(poor qualified and uncontrolled students). This study can provide a scientific basis for the prevention and intervention of teacher burnout for novice English teachers in rural middle schools.Based on this, reasonable proposes and suggestions can be put forward to prevent the loss of the talents of rural middle school English teachers and improve the quality of English teaching in rural middle schools.
