As vanguards in Japan's implementation of the mainland policy, the mainland ronins played an indispensable part in modern Japan's operations of aggression and expansion into China. These nongovernmental mainland ronins,to some extent, reflected public opinions, and they kept close relationship and frequent contacts with senior figures in political, military and business circles, and served as active followers of their thoughts to the external world. As a representative of the mainland ronins in modern Japan,Ryohei Uchida's viewpoints about China and his operations in China, more or less, have an impact on the intricate Sino-Japanese relationship since modern times. This thesis consists of three sections: introduction, body and conclusion. And the body includes chapter two, three, four and five.Chapter two examines the main factors that led to the formation of Ryohei Uchida's early thoughts, such as the historical features, his personal experience and his growth environment. He went through the first Sino-Japanese War and the Russo-Japanese War,and became a mainland ronin, based on these experiences,he summed up a set of effective means of external expansion.Chapter three analyses Ryohei Uchida's overall view of China through his remarks and writings, and then discusses different stages of his moves toward China.Chapter four gives a detailed account of Ryohei Uchida's typical operations in China, such as his involvement in the Revolution of 1911 and the Twenty-one Demands. Then the author will cast a light on the reasons why Ryohei Uchida's view of China around 1913 has radically changed according to these historical facts. In Chapter five,Ryohei Uchida's radical change in his view of China is regarded and analyzed as an epitome of Japanese impression of China. This chapter seeks to reveal the ideological features of the mainland ronins about China and the social evils of that time.
