Films are a kind of audiovisual texts and the dialogues in moving pictures carry literary characteristics,which make film subtitle translation a special kind of literary translation.This thesis takes the Russian film Moscow does not Believe in Tears as the research object,using Skopostheorie and the subtitle characteristics to analyze the differences between the English and Chinese subtitles,assess their translation quality and discuss proper translation strategies and methods.According to the film subtitle characteristics,the text analysis of this thesis includes four parts,including the spoken language,culture,film characters and audiovisual information.The research concludes:the skopos of the film is the same as that of the subtitle translation which centers on the skopos of the audience and the subtitles must conform to the original text and smooth,and meet the popular taste;although Russian,English and Chinese belong to different language families,they are mutually connected regarding language structures,expression means and culture;distinctive dialogue and cultural information are the focus of subtitle translation,thus requiring the translators to deeply analyze target cultures and adopt flexible translation strategies,integrating literal translation and free translation,domestication and foreignization to improve the translation quality;characters are the core of films so the translator must fully understand their features and reproduce their identities,attitudes and emotions;the pictures,sound and dialogues that are specially designed by the director are difficult to translate,so the translator could add notes to the subtitle.The thesis shows that Skopostheorie can guide translators to confirm the subtitle skopos before translation and access the translation quality.During the translation,the translator must fully understand the function of the original text and culture,grasp the character features and audiovisual information,and then connects the target language cultures with flexible translation strategies to meet the skopos of the audience.
