In recent years,Chinese has gradually become the second most popular foreign language after English in South Korea.By the end of this year,23 Confucius Institutes and 13 Confucius Classes have been established in South Korea.The CPIK program for primary and secondary schools has been in operation for five years.The Chinese teachers sent by Hanban have become the main force of Chinese teaching in South Korea.However,Confucius Institute Chinese language teacher volunteers,Confucius Institute Chinese language teachers and CPIK teachers mostly are not familiar with Korean language,which has brought great difficulties to teaching and living in South Korea.In case of the short term and the quick replacement cycle,the issue of language has been more prominent.I worked as a Chinese teacher volunteer in Confucius Institute of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies last year.I found that in Korea the entry-level and elementary students had a certain need for teachers to use Korean as a medium of instruction,while with limited Korean language it is not possible for Chinese teacher to use Korean-assisted instruction.There is a certain gap between the teaching activities and the needs of students.Therefore,I believe that the use of Korean as a medium of instructional language for Chinese language teachers has a research value.I try to make a Chinese-Korean classroom language handbook for the Chinese teachers who work in South Korea.In this paper,the first chapter reviewed the medium of instruction theory,the related research of Chinese teachers’ classroom language and the research achievements of Korean language teaching in South Korea,found the theoretical basis of the study,and determined the methods of classroom observation and quantitative analysis.The second chapter conducted classroom observations.Taking the Confucius Institute of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies as an example,the classroom observation of the entry,primary,and intermediate Chinese classes was conducted.The usage of the Chinese teachers’ medium of instruction was analyzed.The third chapter conducted a needs analysis.A teacher questionnaire was designed and issued for Chinese language teachers,and a student questionnaire was designed and distributed to the students of the Confucius Institute.We tried to use data to analysts expectations for the medium of instruction.In addition,teachers and students with typical experiences were selected to conduct interviews.We tried to understand the needs of teachers and students in medium of instruction from a case-by-case basis and provided evidence for the preparation of classroom language handbook.The fourth chapter introduces the preparation of classroom language handbook and puts forward suggestions for its use.Based on the above survey of the use of medium of instruction,the framework structure and content of the classroom language handbook were determined.Finally,the suggestions for the use of classroom language handbook are proposed in combination with classroom observations,questionnaire surveys,and interview results.This paper mainly draws the following conclusions through classroom observation,questionnaires and interviews:Firstly,the use of teaching medium of instruction.In the Chinese language teaching in South Korea,the use of the media language is universal,and the use of the medium of instructional language in the same level is consistent,with differences among different levels.Secondly,teachers and students need for the medium of instruction.Teachers have a high demand for using Korean as the medium of instruction.Students also hope that Chinese teachers may use Korean as a medium to assist teaching,but the demand of students is lower than that of teachers.Thirdly,the preparation and use of Chinese-Korean classroom language handbook.Based on the above research results,we made a Chinese-Korean classroom language handbook,in which classroom language is classified and discussed according to the classroom teaching links and teaching contents.There are also some suggestions for the teachers who use this handbook:strictly control usage and use the medium of instruction in order to achieve a better teaching effect.
