Translation Report On The Cure,A Special Issue Of British Rock Music Review Series The Ultimate Music Guide

From October 2017,the reporter started to translate one of The Ultimate Music Guide series featuring English rock band The Cure.This magazine was introduced into China by Musikid(Yue Tong),partly for presenting the authentic history of rock music to Chinese readers.During translation,the reporter encountered various problems and developed several solutions.Sometimes,the translation quality is compromised by the lack of knowledge of the context and connotation.In such cases,translators could judge whether the translation is wrong by checking whether the text is logical.To improve the quality of translation,translators should utilize internet resources,books and invite experts to help review the drafts.Sometimes,the quality of the translation may be limited by translator's language proficiency.Translators should never be too self-confident and always refer to English-English dictionaries and parallel texts.But even if the translation is accurate,sometimes it is not readable due to translationese and the lack of corresponding terms in the target language.Translators can easily identify translatinese by reading the text again or reading it aloud especially when the target text is written in translators' first language.When there is no corresponding terms in the target language,translators may combine literal translation with notes explaining the terms.In addition,translators should be critical to the original text,correct and update information with notes indicating these modifications.In this report,the reporter also gives thoughts on the quality of translators.From the reporter's perspective,to produce proper translation,translators need to pay attention to the following aspects.First,translators must ensure that they understand the meaning and logic of the original text.They should be good at using online resources,books,or ask relevant experts to help solve problems.The second is to ensure the correctness of language understanding.Translators should not be too confident in their own language proficiency.Instead,they must be rigorous with themselves,making good use of dictionaries and parallel texts to ensure their understandings are correct.Third,in terms of expression,translators must not only use the authentic target language that the readers are used to,but also convey the original information across cultures.Finally,translators also need to spend time learning knowledge in different fields,which is also important for improving the efficiency and quality of translation.
