A Translation Project Report On Zoot Suit From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence

This thesis is intended to report the process,theoretical guiding principles,remaining problems and their solutions of the writer's translation practice of Zoot Suit.Zoot Suit,as the masterpiece of the American Dramatist Luis Valdez,on the basis of real historical events,has represented the harsh living conditions of Mexican Americans in the 1940 s.In addition to the characteristics of general drama in content and structure,this play possesses unique cultural and linguistic features.In the process of translation,the bilingual characteristics,repeatedly-occurred lyrics,language transformations between different classes and abundant culture-loaded words have brought tremendous difficulties to the author.In accordance with these characteristics,form the perspective of functional equivalence theory,the author of this thesis has adopted the strategy of combining foreignization and domestication and the methods of amplification,omission and annotation etc.so as to reserve the language and structure features of source text and provide the target-text readers with reading experience similar to that obtained by the source-text readers.?This thesis has six parts.The first part is about task description;the second part is task process;the third part is literature review and the fourth part introduces functional equivalence theory and its applications in the translation of Zoot Suit;the fifth part analyzes the detail case studies of the translation of Zoot Suit under the guidance of functional equivalence theory;and the final part concludes the gains and shortages of this project.
