Valparaiso is Don DeLillo's second play.Don DeLillo is one of the most representative postmodernist writers in America,Most of his works reflects the society of post-industrial America.In particular,he focuses on the influence of mass media,consumer culture and ideology on people's behaviour,thoughts and emotions.This drama Valparaiso incorporates live performance with video projection,and the protagonist,Michael went by mistake to Valparaiso,Chik,instead of Valparaiso,Indiana.However,he became a celebrity and took interviews,and committed assisted suicide on a TV talk show.This drama looks at how the media has affected modern mankind.The translator chose Valparaiso as the original text in this translation practice.After searching information and reading many parallel texts,the translator knew basic language features of drama.A drama mainly includes the stage language and the character language.And the stage language consists of background information,descriptions of the character's action and language and other narrative descriptions.While the character language is characterized by individuation and colloquialization.In this translation practice,the translator adopted Eugene Nida's functional equivalence theory and used literal translation and free translation to make equivalence between the source language and target language.Moreover,according to different characteristics of Engliah and Chinese,the translator used ampification and.omission to make target readers easily understand the original text Valparaiso.
