Translation Report On The Island Of Fu Manchu(Chapter1-6)

This thesis is a translation report of suspense novel.The translation material is chapter one to six of The Island of Fu Manchu by British author Sax Rohmer.This report mainly studies on the Chinese translation of English novel.The original edition includes many dialogues,environmental and psychological descriptions which demand the translator pay more attention on preserving original sense of mystery and tension in translation.The author uses the Catford's shift theory as the guiding theory,and explores the translation methods and skills in two main aspects,namely,level shifts and category shifts.Among these,the author explores more in structural shifts,class shifts and unit shift.This report can be divided into six parts.Chapter one introduces the translation project;chapter two introduces the preparation of the project;chapter three is literature review and chapter four is theoretical basis which introduced main content of Catford's shift theory;chapter five is the most important part of whole report,which explores the translation examples under the guidance of Catford's shift theory.Last chapter is the summary of translation practice.The author wishes to apply Catford's shift theory more efficiently in latter translation practice by this report and improve the professional translation quality.
