As the rapid development of urbanization,there are more and more backward rural primary schools that have more small-class than ever before.In the facing of such a phenomenon,nowadays,people have paid much more attention to rural basic education than ever before,especially in English teaching.However,the importance of teaching assessment has always been ignored by English teachers.For pupils,since they are at the primary stage of English learning,they can be easily affected by others.Therefore,external evaluation can make a great impact both on their learning and their life.The author has looked up researches on teaching assessment in rural small-class primary schools through different literature reviews,but only to find few references.In this paper,the present author took two small rural schools in Zunyi as objects of the study,namely,Shilong Primary School of Wuchuan county and Heping Primary School of Zheng'an county,in which students are chosen from grade three to grade six.The paper aims to know more about the current situation of English teaching assessment in the rural schools by the way of questionnaire survey,classroom observation and teacher interviews.Eventually,based on the results,the author has come up with some useful assessment suggestions.In conclusion,the current situation of assessment in this study is mainly reflected by Classroom instruction assessment.Results show that there are some main problems as followings.First,there is a backward evaluation concept in the mind.Second,there are no comprehensive evaluation contents.Third,there are no multiple evaluation subjects.In order to solve those problems,teachers should make most use of the advantages of small-class teaching and try their best to evaluate students in a comprehensive way.At the same time,try to encourage both students and their parents to join the evaluation,gradually realize the change of terminal evaluation to formative evaluation,All in all,thepurpose of evaluation is to facilitate the development of students in an all-around way as well as to help improve the quality of English teaching.
