This thesis tries to analyze the characteristics of spatial writing in Thomas Hardy's works in the perspective of space theory, mainly based on six novels:The Return Of The Native,Far From The Madding Crowd,Tess Of The D'Urbervilles,The Mayor Of Casterbridge,Jude The Obscure,The Sun's Veto.It takes spatial representation as the main theoretical fulcrum to study the representation relationships between spatial writing and character creation, spatial writing and social culture in Hardy's novels, and the aesthetic significance of literary space based on the representation. As the representations of characters, social and culture, these spaces exhibit the relationship of Victorian urban-rural development, moreover shape characters.Spatial writing is an important component of Hardy's literary space. The expression shows continuity,by which the specific images of Hardy's urban space and rural space are defined, and expresses opposite heterogeneity. It is conducive to excavate the literary feature and space-time concept of Hardy in his spatial writing from the angle of spaces. The thesis analyses the natural space and architectural space of each novel, and the integral images of rural space and urban space are based on them. There are two clues, the first is to analyze the spatial images in horizontal aspect:the characteristics of nature and buildings;the second is to analyze the changes of spaces over time in vertical aspect:the development process of rural space images and urban space images. And then analyze the characters in each of the spaces,to show the relationships among spatial writing, character image creation and character's social situation.Third, links Hardy's novels into whole by connecting the spatial images and the character images, spatial reappearance and the mutual social theme,to excavate the relationship of Victoria urban-rural development represented by the spatial writing. The last part analyzes the aesthetic significance of spatial writing in Hardy 's novels through the summary and abstraction of the above three parts.Hardy's excellent way of spatial writing shapes the aesthetic significance and distinctive characters. The continuity of spatial writing connects Hardy's novels into a literary space that possesses integrity and inherent consistency.
