Du Guangting(AD850-933),a famous Taoist theoretician in the late Tang Dynasty and the Five Dynasties,he inherited the philosophy that emphasized metaphysics of Tang Dynasty,and had a great influence on the thought of Taoism which emphasized self-cultivation in Song Jin and Yuan Dynasty,was an important figure in the transitional process in the development of Taoism in the Tang and Song Dynasties.Dao De Zhen Jing Guang Sheng Yi is the important creation of Du based on the Tao Te Ching explanatory notes and commentaries written by Emperor Xuanzong.He repositioned the Tao Te Ching on the purpose of government and self-cultivation.He developed and interpreted the concept of ruling a country and self-cultivation in the Emperor Xuanzong's Tao Te Ching explanatory notes and commentaries,and in this process,he infused abundant philosophy of life.In Dao De Zhen Jing Guang Sheng Yi,Du inherited the conventional ideology of Taoism,he regarded Tao as the source of life,he believed that human life came after Tao and Qi,and if man wanted to live forever,one must abide by Tao and cultivate Qi.At the same time,Du paid more attention to the pursuit of the transcendence of human spirit than to eternal life,he absorbed and mixed together Confucianism,Buddhism and Taoism,emphasized self-cultivation,such as nature regression and inner forging.He hoped through the practice of self-cultivation ultimately achieved the Taoism final goal: possess eternal life and have the realm of self-transcendence,and then become a celestial being.Finally,he regarded the self-cultivation as the foundation of the governing the country,and the key to managing the country lied in self-cultivation and referred it to the fundamental height.He pointed out that self-cultivation was the common principle between the Taoist and secular people,and he also emphasized that the dynast should follow the principle of Inaction in the Taoism to govern the country,to save people's hearts and to realize the peace of society.Du inherited Emperor Xuanzong's political purpose that took Taoism as the national religion,not only paid attention to physical practice,but also set government and self-cultivation as the fundamental essence of Tao Te Ching.The philosophy of life in Dao De Zhen Jing Guang Sheng Yi,paid close attention to self-transcendence,at the same time,there was a strong focus on governance and social stability.
