An Excerpted E-C Translation Of Handbook Of Applied Dog Behavior And Training (Volume One) And A Critical Commentary

The present project consists of two parts:an E-C translation of Development of Behavior excerpted from Handbook of Applied Dog Behavior and Training(Volume One)by Steven R.Lindsay,a dog behavior consultant and trainer who lives in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania,and a critical commentary on what the translator has learned in the process of translation,including the problems and difficulties that have baffled her and the solutions that she has come up with by drawing on the strategies and theories she has learned in MTI classes.The source text is one which falls into the category of "informative" type as Peter Newmark or later Katharina Reiss describes in their typological classification of texts.Its purpose is to instruct dog lovers or dog keepers about knowledge they should have when living with a dog.Given the nature of the text,the translator finds that the Skopos theory can be of great use and help to her when she translates,as it puts emphasis on the purpose,effect and function of translation.The end justifies the means.Therefore,in translating the text,the translator resorts to all kinds of techniques in handling difficult sentences that contain the passive voice and participial phrases acting as post-positive attributive and result adverbial,etc.A summary of these techniques is given in the translation report that follows.Structurally,this report is divided into six parts.The first part describes the significance of the project,the analysis of the original text and preparations before translating.The second part discusses difficulties of translation.The third part talks about the theoretical foundation.The fourth part and the fifth part are the focus of this report,in which the translator will show through examples how the Skopos theory and translation techniques have helped her to overcome difficulties discussed in the second part.And finally,this report goes to the conclusion.By writing this report,the translator hopes to provide some references and useful suggestions for translators to come.
