Reading,as one of the five basic skills of English learning, could be regarded as the process of gaining new knowledge and information for learners in language learning.Currently, the information technology and multimedia network have been developing rapidly, which put forward new requirements for individuals' reading, that is,to obtain information quickly and accurately. In order to adapt to those new requirements, some changes have been made in CET-4 and CET-6 since 2006.Apart from the traditional reading, the fast reading which takes 10% points has been added. However, the author found that it could be difficult for students to complete the fast reading in limited time, let alone obtain information effectively.According to previous researches, lots of key obstacles concerned on reading, such as bad reading habits and unskilled reading have been found among students' reading experiences, which greatly hinder reader's reading efficiency. Therefore, how to help learners get rid of bad reading habits and master fast reading skills so as to improve reading efficiency have become the most urgent issues in current English teaching.Nowadays, under the background of information-integration,the Computer-assisted Language Learning has been proved to be an effective teaching philosophy, which has caught the attention of a growing number of researchers at home and abroad. However, the related empirical researches on non-English majors' fast reading with the aid of AceReader Elite is relatively rare.Based on the Autonomous Learning Theory and Cognitive Learning Theory, the current study applies Fry's calculation formula of reading efficiency and the AceReader Elite to college English fast reading teaching, aiming at exploring the following issues:(1)Can the training of English fast reading based on AceReader Elite improve students' reading efficiency?(2)Which group make a more obvious improvement in the training of English fast reading, the high reading efficiency group or the low one?(3)What's the subjects' overall attitude towards this training model?56 geography majors in total from two parallel classes of a university in Gansu Province were chosen as participants. Two parallel classes were randomly divided into the experimental class and controlled one.Two different training methods were adopted in those two classes, namely, applying AceReader Elite to instruct students in the experimental class fast reading while the traditional teaching method was adopted in the controlled class. The experimental teaching in both EC and CC lasted for nine weeks. The instruments applied in present study are as follow: three testing papers(excerpt of fast reading part from CET-4),an open-ended interview and a questionnaire. All data were collected and analyzed in SPSS 16.0.The final results show that the fast reading training mode based on AceReader Elite is feasible and effective, which exerts positive influence on the improvement of non-English majors' fast reading efficiency(P = 0.04 < 0.05).Secondly,the results also show that participants in low group make a more obvious progress than that in high one.In addition, the results of the survey prove that subjects take positive attitudes toward the training mode, and they deem that AceReader Elite could improve their reading habits and reading efficiency. At the end, based on experiment results, the present author summarizes the enlightenment and the limitations of the study, and the aspects need to be improved in the future researches have been mentioned as well.
