With the development of informatization and the fast speed of knowledge update, lifelong learning has become a sort of survival philosophy. To foster the students’ ability ofautonomic learning has been the main goal for the higher education. Meanwhile, the blossomof multimedia technology provides matched auxiliary tools and teaching means for thestudents and teachers to follow that instruction. The application of CAI (computer-aidedinstruction) gets rid of the scrupulousness and baldness of the traditional classroom, andknowledge is decorated vividly and interestingly by the courseware; besides, the popularity ofInternet and distant education sets up a platform for autonomous learning. Therefore, usingmultimedia and Internet as teaching aids has been an irresistible trend of educational reformfor colleges and universities. This thesis is intended to investigate and discuss the presentstatus of students’ ability of autonomous learning under the academic environment where themultimedia and network are treated as the auxiliary set. Furthermore, it is also designed toresearch how the multimedia and Internet influence the learner autonomy and what theteacher role should change into under the new model of language teaching.Under the theoretical direction of Constructivism, Cognitive Psychology, HumanisticPsychology and Second Language Acquisition, an investigation of427sophomorenon-English major students at Hebei College of Industry and Technology is launched byusing a questionnaire and conversations; besides, three of the teachers are invited to take partin the face-to-face interviews. The questionnaire is prepared to investigate the participants fortheir learning styles and the ability of autonomous learning under the circumstances of CAI,which includes the students’ beliefs about learning, learning approaches, learning strategies, learning motivation as well as the students’ attitudes toward the transition of the teacher roleand the autonomous learning under the circumstances of computer technology. The collecteddata is comparatively analyzed by SPSS16.0. As the final statistics indicate, the studentshave had the consciousness of being autonomous in study, but the ability of autonomouslearning is universally weak. Meanwhile, in the learning process, the multimedia and networkas emerging auxiliary tools for study help to promote the students’ learner autonomy. Moreover, in order to cater for the trend that the traditional classroom is changing into thecomputer-assisted one, the teacher role should be switched to help the students learnindependently better. Finally, some pedagogical implications are obtained according to the situationspresented in this paper, which might be a help for all the students and teachers in the newmodel of language teaching.
