Coetzee is a famous white South African writer and the winner of Nobel Prize for Literature in 2003.Writing in the history of colonialism in South Africa,Coetzee broke through the limitations of postcolonial feminism.He is not only concerned about the colonial black female's living conditions,but also focuses on White female's life and spiritual pursuit.Based on the theories of post-colonialism,feminism and the existing research results,this paper studies the roles of white female in J.M.Coetzee's four novels to discuss special charter and social significance of these female roles.The novels are In the Heart of the Country,Foe,Age of Iron and Disgrace.This article is divided into five parts:The first part is introduction.In this part,the author briefly introduces Coetzee's main works and research purpose of this essay.Then,it analyzes the research situation of Coetzee at home and abroad.On this basis,the research method and significance of this paper are put forward.In addition,the historical background and post-colonial and feminism theories adopted in this chapter are briefly introduced in order to make a theoretical bedding for the development and analysis in the following part.Chapter ? to Chapter ? are bodies of the paper.The first chapter analyzes the special status of white female shaped by Coetzee in the postcolonial context.The first section describes self-role characteristics of white females in the binary opposition power relations between white and black,and they are in a dominant position as well.The second section interprets other-role characteristics of white females in this power relation between male and females.The second chapter explores the embarrassing existence of white females with their special identities.The first section presents the efforts of these females to get rid of the label of other.The second section analyzes identity in the historical reality.Chapter ? discusses the significance of these special female roles shaped by Coetzee.The first section analyzes the fate of females in the colonial history.The second section explores the hope of reconciliation that Coetzee puts on these white females.The last part is conclusion,which summarizes the point of view of this paper.The author hopes that with the study of white female roles in Coetzee's novels,we can have a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the characters in his main novels in order to further enrich the research of his works.
