In this article I focus mainly on the issue of the Modification in Husserl’s Phenomenology. When we give a deeply reading to Husserl’workings,it’ll be easy to find that the concept Modification running through many parts of his treatises. For example, when it comes to the free variations in imagination, the sights changing on both sides of Noesis-Noema,the Memory,Imagination and such modifications happening in the internal time-consciousness etc. However, this concept usually did’ catch those researchers’ attentions, they have taken too much efforts on analyzing the Eidetic Reduction, the Intentionality,Noesis-Noema and so on,surely these concepts are apparently very important to grasp Husserl’s Phenomenology. However, they never inquire into the cause of the matter:How it is possible for these activities happening without modification or variation?Whether the Modification used by Husserl played an important role in the illustration of his phenomenology? And what are the necessary contents for these modifications, these questions need to be answered closely. In order to explain the concept Modification and clary its never replaced functions in Husserl’s argument.I will make a connection with Husserl’s several representative treatises, including Logical Investigation,Pure Phenomenology and Phenomenological Philosophy I,Living-World Phenomenology,The Phenomenology of Internal Time Consciousnessand so on.Chapter 1 inquires the concept modification in philosophical history, especially how it was used by some philosophers. And then comes to the etymological origins of this concept. At last I try to classify the functions of the modification into three aspects according Husserl’s research focus in different stages. These tree kinds of function of modification can be shown as:eidetic modifications, the technique of varying the properties of an object in imagination or phantasy, with the aim of judgingwhichproperties are essential to an object of that type,an objectwith its eidos or essence;modifications happening both on the Noesis sides and the Noema sides, this kind of modifications aim at Beliefs modifying-the characters of the act of consciousness, and modifications of the objects of internal time-consciousness.Chapter 2-4 attempts to discuss individually about the three aspects of modifications. For the first one, exclusively concerns with the phantasy free variation as a method to assess to eidos. This method indeed may be not unproblematic as Husserl had thought. On one hand, the eidos or the meaning spheres have reminded readers of platonic Ideas world. On the other hand, since Husserl had dismissed Locke’s ideas theory as the ideas theory, however in the living world phenomenology when he criticized Galileo’s mathematical nature,it seemed he has come back to Locke’s point to some extent. For the second one,I will argue that modifications explicate thoroughly the original modes in the consciousness structure-Noesis and Noema. For the third one,I will elucidate that various modified internal time-objects were possible only with the modifying of the original modes in internal time-consciousness.Chapter 5 initiates analysis on the necessary conditions for the modification phenomena,I have compared the phenomenological.modifications with those in natural realms, and concluded that the true modification can be possible only within the transcendental consciousness.
