Abstract/Summary:
The search for time consciousness is a clue that cannot be ignored in the development of plastic art.The exploration of time consciousness in plastic art is of great significance to art history and aesthetic research. In the study of philosophical time, the evolution of the time concept from the spatialized time concept to the inner experience is clearly visible. The traditional time concept is a quantifiable flow of time.Compared with the modern time concept, such a time concept is With the attribute of "instrumentation",people’s subjective feelings about time are also limited by the way of measuring time according to natural phenomena. After the rise of modern philosophy, the modern view of time has gotten rid of the cognition that the pure form world is external to human beings and inherent in nature, and regards the way of existence of the external world as internal to human beings, resulting in the thinking of "everything given" Shift to generative thinking of "everything will be".However,in the history of plastic art,the development and evolution of art’s temporal characteristics is not as clear as its spatial characteristics. Therefore, this paper refers to the concept of time in the history of Western thought, relies on the characteristics of plastic art in different stages of development in art history, takes the most typical forms of plastic art—painting and sculpture as the main research objects, and analyzes the performance of time consciousness in different periods. The main body of the thesis is divided into four parts:The first part first explains two questions:the evolution process of the concept of "plastic art" and what is the time consciousness in plastic art.The concept of "plastic art" evolved from the related concepts of "craftsmanship and technology" in the ancient Greek period.Gotthold Ephraim Lessing clearly pointed out in Laocoon, and since then he has led to the debate on the classification of "space art" and "time art".The expression of time consciousness in plastic arts has gone through the process from concealment to appearance, from the suggestion of movement relationship to the search for the inner experience of the subject. In the second part of this article,it mainly discusses the way in which plastic art implies time in the traditional classical art period.During this period, artistic creation ignored the expression and excavation of time consciousness.Artists’ expression of time consciousness was unconscious, and time-consciousness was often implied and hidden behind the spatialized display through the method of "combining movement with stillness”.There are roughly two directions for the expression of dynamic and static relationships, namely, the condensed moments of narrative events and the inclusive moments of movement gestures. The third part of this paper discusses the gradual emergence of time consciousness in plastic arts. There are two signs of appearance:First, the expression of time process in plastic art.Generally, there are two ways of expressing time process in plastic art, that is,a single image. The sequence of events in the picture(Michelangelo’s "The Last Judgment",Masaccio’s " Tax Money")and multi-picture compositions(Hogarth’s "Fashionable Marriage",the altar triptych,Munch’s "Tax Money","Life" portfolio).Compared with works expressing movement, panorama paintings and group paintings with image narrative function are more temporal in nature, and they focus more on the sequential and sequential process of story development time. Most of these works carry a more practical "recording" function, striving to show the sequence of major events and the progression of the storyline more accurately, and describe the details of each time period in a more specific and rich manner authenticity. The emergence of Impressionism opened the awakening of time consciousness in modern plastic art.Impressionism’s reference to photography technology made plastic art have more attempts to express time. They began to try to record short-lived,instantaneous and accidental experiences, and to express the sense of pause in time.replaced by a momentary form. The fourth part of the thesis discusses the way in which the plastic arts have expressed the concept of time since the 20th century. The 20th century gave birth to the art of cinema, which can create dynamic artistic images, further changing the concept of time in people’s minds. As a result, time is gradually objectified by the artist, reconstructed in the artwork, and becomes an artificial element for constructing the "image of the world".Artists can create plastic art themes about "time" according to their subjective intentions, and the concept of time is to reflect the essence of modernity in the process of imageization. At this stage,Kandinsky’s music visualization,Cubism represented by Picasso, and surrealism represented by Dali and Magritte all made outstanding attempts to express time.Surrealism’s thinking on time consciousness is manifested in the creation of deformed time, magical dreams and absurd memories, while Cubism turns motion perspective into artistic modeling, and its space-time unity is reflected in the simultaneous observation of space, that is,It superimposes countless momentary images on the same picture, and at the same time shows the integrity of the objects in an all-round way, realizing the comprehensive state of time and space.Cubism’s performance of musical instruments is extremely wonderful, which makes an analogy with Kandinsky’s attempt to visualize music-music and painting have the same origin and are integrated, and both aim to pursue inner spirit and express strong emotions.Through this cross-sensory inspiration mechanism, sensory stimulation will produce involuntary experience in other senses, which is a psychological process of shifting, transforming, infiltrating, and communicating with various sensations in the process of perception, representation, and image formation. In kinetic art, movement, time, technology and artistic concerns are integrated in the art,and the actual state of movement can affect our perception of the present in a way that is different from the expression of movement in traditional painting and sculpture art.Kinetic art shows us that "movement" has the powerful ability to create suspense,to prolong time,or to cut through our own experience as we move the artwork.Actual athletic performance, however, also raises questions about how we respond to the movement patterns of the artwork when we interact with it,and how we move around it in relation to the body movements.
