Analysis Of Liu Yongji’s Research On Chuci

Liu Yongji, an representative of traditional scholar in Chuci during 20 th century,which was a transition period for traditional and modern Chuci study, has selected Qu Yuan and his works for research. His rigorous academic attitude, deep knowledge of literature, distinctive research style and great achievements in research played an instructive role in Chuci study, especially his research method had a profound influence on the later researchers in Chinese ancient literature.The paper consists of four chapters.;The first chapter is about the introduction of background information. By making a specific analysis of social reforms in modern China and the study origin of Liu Yongji, the results suggest it was the social environment of the Republican period that resulted in his choice for Chuci study, and the evolution of Chuci study also contributed to his distinctive research method.The second chapter gives a review of his achievements. Liu Yongji’s achievements in Chuci study could be classified into four parts: his research in words,phrases, sentences, chapters, contexts; his analysis of literary characteristics and achievements of Chuci, and his emphasis on thoughts and moral quality of Qu Yuan.In addition, he also had many original viewpoints in the study of Qu Yuan’s poem style, Historical Records: Biographies of Quanyuan and other respects.The third chapter is concerned with the analysis of his study characteristics. The characteristics was analyzed from four aspects, that is, his passion for academic research, his perfect critical theory, his traditional research method and his completed work system.The fourth chapter involves the influence of his study. The chief contribution of Liu Yongji was to inherit the former Chuci study and to enlighten the latter one.however, it also should be noticed that as limited by times,some of his conclusions was kind of biased and new Chuci study tended to be neglected. All of these were worthy of further reflection.
