On Text Deconstruction And Reconstruction In Translation From The Perspective Of Intertextuality

This thesis is a study of text deconstruction and reconstruction in translation from the perspective of intertextuality.It takes the translation of Guy Davenport’s Gunnar and Nikolai as an example because the short story contains a large number of intertextu,al references.The thesis describes how to recognize,interpret and reconstruct the intertexuality of the source language at three stages of intertextual translation.This thesis identifies the intertextual references of the source language as either intratexual or extratextual.Intratextuality further breaks down into grammatical cohesion,lexical cohesion and structural cohesion,while extratextuality into dominant extratextuality and recessive extratextuality.The former mainly involves references,cliches,literary allusions,idiomatic expressions,and interpretations,while the latter mainly concerns genre,theme,and structure.Intertextual translation refers to a process of transferring intertextual references from the source text to the target text.The process includes three stages:reference-identification,interpretation,and expression.Following this classification and the three-stage process of intertextual translation,the translator should first identify the intertextual references,then interpret it in the source context,and finally find appropriate expressions to translate it into the target language.Since intratextual references mainly involve grammatical and lexical structures,the translator can adopt translation strategies such as combination and division to adequately render the kernel sentences as understood.Extratextual references,on the other hand,tend to carry historical and cultural information,so the translator often uses strategies such as amplification and extension to convey cultural messages of the source language,while considering their communicative and applicative functions as well during translation.
