The transmission of the style is an important aspect for literary translation.It is therefore the most significant issue in the translation studies.Since there are so much differences of language,thought and culture between China and foreign countries,the transmission of style in literary translation faces many obstacles,especially for text which has a clear style.When the style is more individual,translation will encounter more obstacles.At the same time,the space of translation becomes larger.As one of the most important writers of the Chinese literature.Ge Fei was one of the three representative writers of 'avant-garde' in China during the 1980s.In the twentieth century,Ge Fei drew inspiration from classical Chinese literature and writing,and experienced a turning to the traditional classical style of Chinese literature.Considered as a writer who has adopted a serious attitude on writing,Ge Fei han not written many works,but his works have an elegant and refined language,combining the elegance and poetry.The theme of the novel takes care more of history and destiny.All this formed his style which is completely original of other writers.The transmission of classical elements in his works attract the most attention from the translation studies.It is estimated that the classical beauty of Chinese literature was the most special style of Ge Fei,but also barriers to the dissemination and accepts of his works abroad.Based on this acknowledgement,this paper will examine the French translation of Ren Mian Tao Hua.This novel is the most presentative of turning to the classical tradition of Ge Fei.The French translation is accomplished by Bernard Bourrit and Li Bourrit.Comprised by a French translator and a Chinese translator,translation of Ren Mian Tao Hua can better understand the connotations of the original text.At the same time,they can also translate in the most appropriate French.We are going to discuss the difficulties that translators can meet from the linguistic,literary and cultural dimension.By detailed comparisons,we can analyze more deeply about the specialty of the original text,obstacles and strategies of translation and translators.Therefore,this thesis will be divided into three parts:introduction,main body and conclusion.In the introduction part,we will discuss the cultural conception of translation.From the cultural turn of translation,one can find that the cultural elements have significant magnitudes on the translation activity.Then we will analyze the translation of the representative works of Ge Fei,especially Ren Mian Tao Hua.For existing research in China and abroad,this paper will present the issue we are trying to solve.The main part is divided into three chapters.In the first chapter,we will address the problems related to the translation of words,including proper names and adjectives.The vocabulary in Ge Fei's novel is known for its classic elegance.It contains particular aesthetic beauty of traditional Chinese literature.Compared to the translation in French of Feng Ru Fei Tun by Noel Dutrait,the French version of Ren Mian Tao Hua adopts a rather literal way to translate words with classical beauty of Chinese tradition.This has made the translation as fluent as possible,but speaking of the reproduction of deep meaning,it can still be improved.The second chapter is based on the level of literature.Starting with the narrative technique,the thetorical feature and the rythme,it aims to show the recreation of the poetry in the text.The novel Ren Mian Tao Hua inherits the tradition of the historical narrative and lyrical poetry.It uses figures of speech such as symbol,allusion and image.For the structure of the sentence and words,it forms a special beauty by rhythm.The translation of the novel has employed different means such as restitution and interpretation to reproduce its literariness.However,because of the huge differences in the literary tradition and the lack of knowledge of Ge Fei's literary research,the translation is far from perfect.In the third chapter,we will study the translation of cultural elements to discuss the translation of popular religion and the custom to find the gain and loss in the French translation of Ren Mian Tao Hua.We can find that the translators tried to overcome the difficulties of culture,there are still many deficiencies because of the culture differences.In conclusion,we will try to summarize the specialty of the French translation of Ren Mian Tao Hua.It should be noted that despite all the efforts that translators have done to clear the obstacles of words,literature and culture,there are always losses in translation.The contradiction is that the most interesting feature of Ge Fei's novel is its classic beauty 'of the language,but it is the most difficult to transmit.In contrast,the experimental writing in the novel has hurt his story.This is why the works of Ge Fei has always been difficult to be accepted abroad.According to Georges Mounin,translation is possible but limited.The most attractive feature of Ge Fei's novel is precisely the translation boundary but also the aspect that the translators could make efforts so that the translation is approaching more and more to the original text.
