Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of English teaching in Primary school is to stimulate the students’ interest in learning English,because of the learning contents gradually increased,high-level graders in primary school are often spend a certain amount of time in memorizing words,although they spent a great deal of effort,but did not achieve good results.Words always be remembered,but immediately forgotten,it is not only against the self-confidence of students in learning English,but also make students produce school-weary psychology.Due to the lack of introduction and use of memory strategies in teaching process,the teachers can’t promote the students’ English word memory level and improve their interest in English.Therefore,to find a suitable and effective memory method for pupils’and help them to memorize words easily,it is very urgent.This paper aims to survey the current situation of elementary English words memory ability,and the use effect of several kinds of word memory strategies that are suitable for pupils’ memory characteristics and whether these memory strategies can improve the students’ academic performance.After looked up a lot of books about memory method and strategies,the author choose six word memory strategies that are suitable for pupils’.Then the author taught these strategies to students in hope of to find using effect of each memory method,so as to find ways to solve pupils’ memory problems.The author selected two parallel class for this empirical study,they are from Dongfanghong Elementary School in Jianghan oilfield.The pupils are in grade five,each class have 45 students.One is as the experimental class,the other is as the control class.First of all,the author carried on an investigation,in order to investigate the present situation of English word memory ability of the two classes,and then use Excel to analyze the students’ questionnaires.Before the Empirical Research,two classes have carried out an examinations,and the test results are recorded by the author,then the author taught English word memory strategies to the experimental class,but the control class are not taught any word memory strategies.In the Empirical Research,two classes are taken 18 times words dictation and one spelling test,the results are recorded.At the end of the Empirical Research,the other test was carried out.The author used spss statistical software to analysis the data of dictations and examinations of the two classes,in order to see if the learning of word memory strategies can improve the memory efficiency of English words and English performance.Then used Excel to analyze the results from questionnaire after the experiment,After the study,the author found that experimental class student’s English words memory ability is significantly higher than students in control class.And in experimental classes,the students’ learning motivation is higher than before.Many students have more confidence in English learning.The revelation from this empirical study is to teach pupils word memory strategies can not only improve the students’ vocabulary memory efficiency,but also improve students’ English achievements,but the using effect is different for each word memory strategies,among the six word memory strategies,Being the most used and the best effect is image memory and overall memory method,followed by Letters change memory method,context memory method,classification method,and it’s not reasonable to use song memory method.And every memory method has its own advantages and disadvantages,so our students should selective memory word memory strategies according to their own characteristics.
