ObjectiveTo investigate the changes of olfaction of depression before and after medical treatment, and preliminarily scrutinized the association between the olfactory function and the depressive symptoms.MethodForty-eight patients with depression were recruited and 33 healthy controls?HCs?matched on gender, age, and level of education.17-items Hamilton Depression Rating Scale?HAMD-17?,Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale?HAMA?,the Chinese Smell Identification Test?CSIT?,and Emotional Stroop test?EST?were measured to assess severity of emotional symptoms, olfactory function, and response inhibition.Forty-eight depression patients were assessed before treatment?baseline?and35 patients with depression were assessed 3 months after treatment?follow-up?,and the HC group was evaluated only once. The correlation analysis of olfactory was calculated by multiple linear regression stepwise analysis at baseline phrase.ResultThe CSIT score and self-reported olfactory score?SROS?were statistically significant between the baseline and the follow-up group and between the baseline and the control group?P's<0.05?.Positive word-color congruent?POS-C?,positive word-color incongruent?POS-I?,negative word-color congruent?NEG-C?.negative word-color incongruent?NEG-I?,and neutral?NEU?word at the baseline VS.the follow-up and the baseline VS.the HC group were statistically significant differences?P's<0.05?,but NEG-C,NEG–I and NEU showed statistically significant?P's<0.05?between the follow-up and the HC group. At the baseline level,y=score of CSIT included x1=age?y?and x2=MRT of NEG-C of EMT?F=13.319,P<0.05,R2=0.369,adjusted R2=0.341?by stepwise multiple linear regression.ConclusionCompared with the HCs,the patients with depression had olfactory functional defects and response inhibition defects before treatment. The olfactory function of MDD appears to be negatively correlated with the age and the MRT of negative word-color congruent before treatment. After the remission of MDD,the olfactory dysfunction returned to be normalized, which might be regarded as a measurable indicator of depression brain function.
