Research background and purpose:Background: According to statistics, depression is one of the most common mental disorders in the elderly. In addition, thyroid dysfunction is a common disease among the elderly. There are many studies on thyroid function in the elderly. Some of them believe that thyroid function in the elderly is basically normal, while others believe that subclinical thyroid dysfunction in the elderly is more common than obvious thyroid dysfunction.Depression and thyroid dysfunction are common health problems in old age,so many studies put them together. Some studies linked thyroid dysfunction in the elderly to an increased risk of depression and also others found no relationship between thyroid dysfunction.Research on the depression in the elderly and thyroid dysfunction have not drawn any causal conclusions so far.Purpose: Taking hospitalized elderly patients as an example, the correlation between thyroid serological index level and depression was discussed to provide some reference ideas for the pathogenesis of depression.Materials and Methods:The experimental subjects were collected by convenient sampling method, and the experimental group and control group were set up.We use depression Self rating scale(Self-rating 'scale,SDS)to evaluate the degree of patients with depression, and the serum levels of thyroid stimulating hormone(TSH),total triiodothyronine(TT3),total thyroxine(TT4),free triiodothyronine(FT3)and free thyroxine(FT4)are tested by chemiluminescence. To analysis the relationship between thyroid function in the elderly and depression.Result1.Gender,age and educational level of hospitalized elderly were not correlated with subjective feelings of depression symptoms, physical manifestations of depression symptoms and total depression scores.2.Among the hospitalized elderly, the serum TSH level of 8.2% was increased, and the serum TSH level of females was higher than that of males, and the difference was statistically significant(P <0.05).3.The serum TT3 level of hospitalized elderly patients was lower than that of young and middle-aged patients, and the difference was statistically significant(P <0.05).4.Among the hospitalized elderly, there were a large number of individuals with depressive tendencies, accounting for 80.7% of the total. The total score of subjective feelings of depressive symptoms in hospitalized elderly patients was lower than that of young and middle-aged patients, and the difference was statistically significant(P <0.05).5.Serum TT4 level in hospitalized elderly patients was positively correlated with subjective feelings in depressive symptoms(r =0.213,P <0.05),with physical manifestations in depressive symptoms(r =0.178,P <0.05),and with total depression score(r =0.286,P <0.01).Serum FT4 concentration in hospitalized elderly patients was positively correlated with somatic performance in depressive symptoms(r =0.217,P <0.05)and positively correlated with total depression score(r =0.221,P <0.05).6.Among hospitalized young and middle-aged patients,There was no statistically significant association between gender, age, educational level, thyroid serological index level and subjective feeling, physical performance and total depression. Conclusion:The incidence of subclinical hypothyroidism in hospitalized elderly patients is high, especially in women. The proportion of elderly patients with depression is high, somatic symptoms are dominant and subjective feelings are not obvious.Thyroid function was associated with depression in hospitalized older adults.Thyroid function was associated with subjective mood and somatic symptoms of depression in hospitalized elderly patients. The mechanism of thyroid hormone is strongly associated with age.
