Objective: To investigate the current condition of cancer pain management in the Second Hospital of Hebei Medical University in order to evaluate physicians' and patients' knowledge, attitudes and the barriers to pain management with an emphasis on the use of opioid drugs. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in China among two groups of participants from November 2018 to January 2019.Different questionnaires based on the Furstenberg' questionnaire were improved to investigate the clinical physicians and cancer patients respectively about the current condition of cancer pain, the attitude and knowledge about cancer pain management, and the potential barriers of cancer pain management. And the statistics was analyzed using the software of SPSS 23.0.Results: A total of 861 clinical physicians and 115 patients with cancer pain completed the survey.Among patients, the barriers included the degree of pain(OR=5.634,P<0.01)and whether to take opioids(OR=0.170,P<0.01);And taking analgesics regularly can significantly increase PMI value(P<0.01).The results revealed several knowledge-related and attitude-related barriers among physicians.Physicians who cared more cancer patients had more knowledge than those who cared less patients(OR=4.441,P<0.01).Physicians who had training about cancer pain were likely to have less negative attitudes than those never had cancer pain management training(OR=2.941,P<0.01).Conclusions: This study investigated the status of cancer pain management in The Second Hospital of Hebei Medical University and their understanding of knowledge and attitudes toward cancer pain and opioids, and found that the main barriers in patients and physicians were inadequate knowledge about cancer pain and opioids. Therefore,an effective educational strategy for cancer pain management is needed in order to improve medical professionals' knowledge and clinical practices.
