Objective:To investigate the extent of tumor resection and postoperative survival of pilocytic astrocytoma patients, and to evaluate the efficacy of micro-surgical treatment of pilocytic astrocytoma. Methods:The clinical data of 67 patients with pilocytic astrocytoma, who underwent tumor resection in the first affiliated hospital of Xinjiang Medical University from September 2010 to September 2019,were analyzed retrospectively. Results: A total of 67 patients underwent tumor resection in this study(33males and 34 females =1:1.03,aged 22 months to 71 years),including 36 cases(53.7%)of gross total resection,6 cases(9.0%)with near total resection,11 cases(16.4%)of subtotal resection,11 cases(16.4%)of partial resection and only biopsy in 3 cases(4.5%).The postoperative complications mainly included hydrocephalus in 5 cases, intracranial infection in 6 cases, and pulmonary infection in 5 cases.Follow-up was available in patients via outpatient or telephone, the follow-up periods were 2 to 99 months, during which tumor recurrence or progression were found in 11 patients, three of whom performed re-resection of tumors. No tumor recurrence was found following gross total tumor resection during the follow-up observation. Conclusion: Pilocytic astrocytomas are relatively rare and primarily treated by surgery, the patients who underwent micro-surgeries of gross total tumor resection had the best prognosis, and incomplete tumor resection was an independent risk factor affecting the prognosis of patients in this study.
