Abstract/Summary:
Objective: To assess the correlation between spheno-occipital synchondrosis(SOS),mandibular third molar mineralization and chronologic age.To explore the correlation between mandibular third molar mineralization, and to provide reference for chronological age estimation in forensic odontology. Methods: From 2017 to 2019,369Cases(142 males and 227 females)of Chinese patients(7-25 years old)in the Department of Orthodontics, the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University were selected for cone-beam computed tomography(CBCT).The classification stage of each sample was determined by reference to the ossification stage of sphenoid-occipital synchondrosis and the calcification stage of the mandibular third molar.Multiple statistical analysis methods were used to evaluate the fusion stage of sphenoid-occipital synchondrosis and the calcification stage of the mandibular third molar The correlation between the age and the sphenoid-occipital synchondrosis, the third molar of mandible and the chronological age,the relationship between the chronological age of different genders. Results: With the increase of the chronological age,the degree of SOS fusion and calcification grade of mandibular third molar gradually increase.Chronological age closely related to calcification of mandibular third molar(male r = 0.861,female r =0.873,P < 0.001).Chronological age closely related to SOS fusion(male r = 0.862,female r = 0.867,P < 0.001).Conclusion: The fusion degree of SOS and calcification grade of mandibular third molar can be used as the reference index for the age determination of Han nationality in the field of forensic odontology in Xinjiang.
