Objective: To investigate Homocysteine(Hcy)and folate levels, prevalence of hyperhomocysteinemia(HHcy)and folate deficiency and the related factors in urban, agricultural and stock-raising population. Methods: Using multistage stratified random sampling method to investigate the inhabitants aged ?15 years in Emin county with the levels of Hcy and folate from January to December 2014.Compare the differences of Hcy and folate levels,HHcy prevalence and folate deficiency in different regions.HHcy was defined as Hcy level ?10umol/L and folate deficiency was defined as folate level<3ng/ml.Results: Totally 1926 subjects with 885(45.9%)from urban,861(44.7%)from agricultural and 180(9.4%)from stock raising regions were obtained. The folate level of subjects from stock raising region was the lowest, followed by those from agricultural region and the highest in those from urban region(3.3 vs 6.5 vs 7.2ng/ml,P<0.001).Although Hcy concentration in the three regions showed no significant difference(14.2vs 13.3 vs 13.2umol/L,P=0.202),subgroup analysis showed significantly higher Hcy in women,Kazakh,non-drinking subjects, low education takers from stock-raising region than did other two regions.Prevalence of HHcy and folate deficiency in stock raising region is the highest(82.2% and 54.8% respectively),followed by agricultural(69.7%,8.3%)and urban(68.4%,2.6%)region with statistical significance(P for all ?0.001).Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that: The OR for HHcy in stock regions was 1.90(95% CI: 1.11-3.27)and the OR for folate deficiency in stock and in agriculture regions was 11.51(95% CI: 7.09-18.67)and 1.91(95% CI: 1.30-2.82)respectively,compared to that in urban region after adjusting for all possible covariates.Conclusions:1.The folate level of stock raisers in Emin County,Tacheng District,Xinjiang is the lowest;2.HHcy and folate deficiency are highly prevalent in stock raisers.
