| Objective: Renal epithelioid angiomyolipoma(EAML)is a rarely kind of angiomyolipoma(AML).The bulk of renal EAML,which was reported,were benign.Whereas in minority of those with the aggressive behavior and malignant phenotype,were malignant.However,the pathogenesis of renal EAML has been poorly understood and the diagnostic criteria of this tumor have not been established.As a result,it is of great significance to find indicators that could predict the malignant potential of renal EAML.The purpose of this study is to pay attention to the expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in renal EAML and investigate the relationship between them and tumor grow,tumor proliferation,tumor aggressive behaviors and metastasis.Methods: We used immunohistochemistry to evaluate MMP-2 and MMP-9 protein expression in 24 cases of renal EAML surgical specimens.Though assessing the expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in renal EAML,the relationship between both and the clinicopathological characters were analyzed and we evaluated the role of them in tumor cell growth,proliferation,invasion and metastasis process.And 20 cases of renal AML tissue were used as control group.Results: In renal EAML,the positive rates of MMP-2 and MMP-9 were significantly higher than those in renal AML,while MMP-2 and MMP-9 were negative in classic AML(P < 0.05).What's more,in renal EAML,those with local aggressiveness were higher than those without local aggressiveness for MMP-2(P < 0.05),and those with atypia of the epithelioid cells were higher than those without atypia of the epithelioid cells(P < 0.05).Third,the expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 were closely correlated to the tumor size,atypical mitotic figures,tumor necrosis and Ki-67 index in renal EAML(P<0.05).Conclusion: the malignant degree of renal EAML with the overexpression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 is higher than those in renal AML.Therefore,they may be used as markers to predict and evaluate the malignant degree and matastasis ability of tumors. |
