Nowadays, with the development of social modernization and the accelerating pace of life, the number of depressed patients and the incidence of depression have increased significantly.Aiming at the symptoms of depression, this paper proposed a music feedback method to regulate depressive emotion based on electroencephalogram(EEG)signals. The method utilized specific music stimuli to regulate the secretion of inhibitory hormones in the body, reduce the influence of negative emotions on the internal environment, and maintain homeostasis.According to the method, this paper designed and realized a music feedback system for intervention on depression based on EEG.In this system,a small-sized and simple-operated three-electrode EEG data acquisition device was used to collect the bio-information of depressed patients. And music,as a feedback method, was used in biofeedback therapy, and regulated depressive emotions effectively. Moreover, this paper also designed the music feedback experiments for depressed patients. In these experiments, the effectiveness of feedback music and feedback system was verified by the analysis of experimental data such as the piece of music which can show the emotional state of depressed patients at a given moment. The main research contents and results in this paper are as follows:(1)This paper proposed a music feedback method to regulate depressive emotion based on EEG signals in response to the emotional states of depressed patients. The method used EEG as emotional monitoring signals for depressed patients, and converted these biological signals into musical signals which could be understood by patients,so that patients can clarify their physiological and psychological states and achieve the regulation of negative emotions through feedback music.Among them, the mechanisms of using music to regulate depressive emotion are as follows: when stimulated by stress, the levels of glucocorticoids in depressed patients will keep increasing, resulting in the apoptosis of limbic system neurons such as the prefrontal, hypothalamus and hippocampus;when stimulated by music, the parasympatheticnervous system will release inhibiting hormone such as acetylcholine, resulting in the decline of various hormones levels, and maintain internal environment invariably. These mechanisms provided a theoretical basis for the music feedback system designed in the next which used music activities as a depressive emotional regulation method.(2)In this paper, with the above-mentioned method and the time-series features of EEG signals,a music feedback system was designed for monitoring and regulating the emotional states of depressed patients in real time. And the positions of left, right and mid forehead(Fp1,Fp2 and Fpz)were selected as the acquisition electrodes of EEG signals. In order to ensure the effectiveness of feedback music and the timeliness of feedback information, each duration of collecting EEG and playing music was designed in 3s.Firstly,EEG acquisition was pretreated into bands.Secondly, the processed EEG bands was used to generate feedback music. Finally, these music pieces was used to regulate the physiological status of depressed patients.Therefor, this paper designed a method to convert EEG signals into music, including EEG segmentation and recombination. Its intention is to ensure that the converted music and the process of creating music can regulate depressive emotion effectively. In addition, this paper also designed two feedback training methods, namely breathing training and music training.According to the different conditions of depressed patients, this paper tried various combinations of two training methods, and selected a feedback training for the majority of mild depressive population to enhance their abilities of cognition and regulation on emotion.(3)This paper designed and completed a music feedback experiment for depressed patients. Moreover, the effectiveness of the music feedback method and system was verified by analyzing the experimental results. This music feedback experiment was divided into two sub-experiments,namely the EEG into music sub-experiment and the music feedback regulation sub-experiment.The purpose of designing the EEG into music sub-experiment is as follows: find the EEG character sequences which can be labeled as positive, negative and normal emotions through EEG segmentation and recombination algorithm;convert these EEG character sequences into positive classical music pieces for regulating depressive emotion effectively. Then we designed a scientific and effective feedback training according to these classical music pieces from the EEG into music sub-experiment,and verified the effectiveness of emotional regulation method and feedback system through theanalysis of the experimental results. The factors that evaluate the intervention effect of the system include the number of the feedback music pieces which are labeled as positive, negative and normal emotions and the depression scale scores. With a six-week follow-up study of 12 postgraduates,we found that the number of the feedback music pieces which are labeled as negative emotion decreased, and the depression scale scores also decreased significantly. The symptom check list(SCL-90)scores decreased by 45.22%,the self-rating depression scale(SDS)scores decreased by 33.85%,and the patient health questionnaire(PHQ-9)scores decreased by 64.84%.
