Background and Objective:Schizophrenia is a group of mental disorders with etiology unclear, which common onset in young adults and often course deferment.People with it were often suffered from various obstacles, not only disorders on perception, thought, emotion, behavior and so on,but also on the mental activity of uncoordinated.Schizophrenia run into a high incidence, caused serious social harm, and its treatment was difficult.Unfortunately, the pathogenesis of schizophrenia is unclear.Sleep disorders are often the premonitory symptoms of schizophrenia and the accompanying symptoms. The quality of sleep of schizophrenia often affects the condition of the recovery.Polysomngraphy provides a good method for the clinical application of sleep indicators of clinical study.Modified electro-convulsive therapy is an effective, safe and widely used in clinical treatment for schizophrenia, but its mechanism is unclear. This study is designed to clear the sleep structure characteristics of patients with schizophrenia, and to explore the influence on sleep structure of patients with schizophrenia after modified electro-convulsive therapy. We also explore the mechanism of modified electro-convulsive therapy further. Methods:We select some patients who had a specific clinical diagnose of schizophrenia and need MECT therapy as his clinical treatment. We give them clinical assessment, then, they are recorded with polysomngraphy for a whole night at the first night before and after the first MECT.We also select a group of healthy control subjects, record one whole night polysomngraphy with the same method. The total sleep time,S1,S2,S3,S4,REM sleep period, slow wave sleep(S3 and S4)period of time and proportion and REM latency are analyzed.Baseline indicators(n = 7)of cases and healthy controls(n = 8)are analyzed with SPSS analysis software for independent samples t test.Complete follow-up before and after MECT therapy for the first time on cases of sleep index(n = 5)using SPSS analysis software for matching t test, the PANSS score and periods of sleep using Pearson correlation analysis. Results:Baseline(n = 7)of cases than healthy controls(n = 8)stage S3,S3 + S4 sleep time and proportion were significantly reduced(P < 0.05);There is no obvious difference of two groups of total sleep time.Stage S1,S2 period,REM sleep time and proportion increased REM latency period has decreased, but no statistically significant difference(P > 0.05).Case group(n = 5)after MECT therapy for the first time the PANSS scores declined, the time of S3 and S3 + S4 period, proportion of sleep S3 were significantly increased(P <0.05);the proportion of sleep S3+S4 period was also increased(P =0.051);Cases,total sleep time and REM latency,S2 and S4 period of sleep time and proportion was increased, stage S1 and REM sleep time and proportion was reduced, but there were no statistically significant difference(P > 0.05).For cases, the changes of sleep structure after MECT therapy for the first time with the PANSS score do Pearson correlation analysis,we found no significant statistically significant correlation.Conclusions:1.The structure of sleep disorders in patients with schizophrenia, slow wave sleep(especially the S3)less than healthy people.2.MECT can improve the sleep structure of the patients with schizophrenia, increased slow-wave sleep.
