Objective:To know the occurrence and characteristics of depressive disorder and suicidal ideation among freshmen in a normal university in Hunan.Methods:6,818 freshmen of a normal university in Hunan in grade 2017 were selected and investigated by two-stage survey.In the first stage,depressive symptoms were screened by the Chinese version of the Beck Depression Scale(BDI-II-C),and self-reported suicide ideation was screened by Item 9(suicide ideation)of BDI-II-C,and the people at risk for suicidal ideation were screened by items 2(pessimistic)and 9(suicidal ideation).In the second stage,DS(depress symptoms)-positive individuals(total score of BDI-II-C ? 13,n = 501)and 7.5% of negative samples(total score of BDI-II-C < 13,n = 425)were interviewed with the Children's Emotional Disorder and Schizophrenia Questionnaire(K-SADS).The diagnosis of depressive disorders was made according to the criteria of the fifth edition of the American Mental Disorder Diagnosis and Statistics Manual(DSM-V).Results:1.The incidence of depressive symptoms was 17.12%.The severity of mild,moderate and severe depression accounted for 11.21%,4.88% and 1.03% respectively.The incidence of depressive symptoms in girls was 18.36%,which was significantly higher than that in boys(14.03%)(p < 0.001).2.K-SADS interview showed that the incidence of depression adjustment was 0.86%,and that of female students was 1.06%,significantly higher than that of male students(0.33%)(p < 0.01)and the time-point incidence of gender-adjusted depression 0.70%.The adjusted lifetime prevalence of depression was 2.74%,the adjusted lifetime prevalence of depression in girls was 3.08%,higher than that in boys(1.85%)(p < 0.01),and the lifetime incidence of gender-adjusted depression was 2.47%.3.The adjusted time-point prevalence of depressive disorder in freshmen with or without bereavement,abuse,major life events and the experience of left-behind in childhood was 1.87% and 0.57% respectively,and the adjusted gender prevalence of these two groups was 1.84% and 0.52% respectively.The prevalence of lifelong depression was 3.10% and 2.28% for the left-behind children with or without bereavement,abuse,major life events and childhood,and the adjusted gender prevalence was 2.84% and 2.18% respectively.4.The incidence of suicide ideation screened by item 9 of BDI-II-C questionnaire was 11.96%,and the adjusted incidence of suicide ideation was 2.46%.Conclusion:Depressive symptoms are common among the freshmen of that normal university,but the incidence of depressive disorder and suicidal ideation of that school is low.The incidence of depressive symptoms and the prevalence of depressive disorders were both influenced by factors such as gender and life events.
