Background:Tumor budding is considered to be an independent risk factor for malignant grade of tumor and prognosis. And it is effective to evaluate lymph node metastasis.Tumor budding can be found in various organs. It is a significant pathological index. Objective:To explore the correlation between tumor budding and clinicopathological factors and prognosis of early gastric cancer. Methods:From June 2011 to January 2017,164 patients with early gastric cancer who underwent radical gastrectomy in Ningbo First Hospital were divided into 3 groups according to their budding grade.Tumor budding was observed through light microscope using HE staining and CK staining respectively. And the patients were followed up.The relationship between tumor budding and clinicopathological factors and prognosis was analyzed statistically. Results:Tumor budding was found in 92 patients(56.1%).Among them,66 cases had low grade budding, while 26 cases had high grade budding.Tumor budding was related to infiltration depth(?~2=7.460,P<0.05),lymph node metastasis(?~2=30.187,P<0.001),TNM staging(?~2=30.187,P<0.001),vascular tumor embolus(?~2=10.111,P<0.05)and early recurrence(?~2=9.696,P<0.05).Nerve invasion and tumor budding were associated with postoperative survival rate, and multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that they were independent prognostic factors of early gastric cancer(P<0.05).Conclusions:Tumor budding is significantly related to unfavourable clinical and histopathological features suggesting the invasiveness of early gastric cancer. It is strongly predictive of lymph node metastases and an important predictor of prognosis.
