Objective To investigate the effect of ulnar styloid fractures(USF)classification and nonunion on wrist function of distal radial fractures(DRF)treated with internal fixation. Methods From January 2012 to December 2012,128 patients with distal radius fractures were treated by open reduction and internal fixation(ORIF).According to the classification of USF,all cases were divided into two groups: 70 patients with top USF,58 patients with basal USF.Depending on the healing conditons of USF,all cases were divided into two groups: 41 patients with healedUSF,87 patients with USF nonunion. All patiens were followed for 39 months on average.Postoperative evaluation included the radiological parameters, the Gartland-Werley and DASH scores, range of wrist motion, grip strength,ulnar-sided wrist pain. Results No differences were apparent in terms of radiological outcomes between groups,no significant differences were found between groups regarding the Gartland-Werley and DASH scores, range of wrist motion, grip strength and ulnar-sided wrist pain at the final follow up.Conclusion Our study demonstrated that the classification and healing status of an ulnar styloid fracture, has no adverse effect on wrist function following ORIF of the distal radius.Using the volar locking plate for the treatment of distal radius fracture can be reliable for internal fixation, allowing patients to carry out early training, thereby enableing patients to restore good wrist function.
