Sleeping excessively is a kind of sleep disorder characterized by sleepiness all the time, waking up as soon as you call, and restoring to sleep after waking up.It is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness and irregular onset time, often occurring in inactive or monotonous and repetitive activities.Because of the uncertainty of onset time,it often affects people's normal life, work, study and physical health.Nowadays, the pace of life is fast, and people are facing challenges from all sides.Changes in dietary and sleep habits and irregular rhythms of life all increase the risk of excessive sleep. Therefore, the study of the occurrence and treatment of the disease is of great significance for the improvement of people's quality of life.As early as in the “ Inner Canon of Huangdi”,there are descriptions of the symptoms of multiple sleeping or sudden multiple sleeping. So far, there have been more than two thousand years of understanding on somnolence. In the course of historical development, doctors have increasingly matured their understanding of the syndrome of multiple sleeping. They have put forward many effective treatment principles and methods, and left abundant literature for the treatment of multiple sleeping.Based on the method of documentary research, this paper briefly explains the understanding of sleep process in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and proceeds from the name, etiology, pathogenesis, dialectics, treatment, prescriptions and medicines of somnolence, divides the period from Pre-Qin to Ming and Qing Dynasties into four historical stages, searches and collates the literature of somnolence and the development of somnolence in each period. To summarizing and analyzing the development situation and characteristics in each period,in order to reveal the origin of the academic development of somnolence,to provide reference for clinical diagnosis and treatment of somnolence, and to provide new ideas for the further study of somnolence.Through reviewing the relevant literature in different periods,it is found that there are many nicknames for polysomnia, which can be divided into twocategories according to the meaning of the disease name. One is the increase of sleep time, the other is the strong subjective will of patients.Based on the understanding of sleep process in TCM,all the reasons that hinder Wei Qi from going out of Yin to Yang are the causes of excessive sleep. For example, exogenous pathogens and internal organ injuries are the causes of excessive sleep. They can also act together as pathogenic factors.Exogenous pathogens such as typhoid fever, febrile diseases, and sensation of summer pathogens can be named after different time of onset of exogenous pathogens.Different, can be classified as typhoid fever;internal organs injury involving heart, kidney, gallbladder and spleen and other viscera. The pathogenesis of excessive sleep is that Wei Qi cannot go out of Yin to Yang,Yang deficiency and Yin prosperity, and excessive sleep occurs. In explaining the pathogenesis of polysomnia, physicians of past dynasties elaborated the relationship between Ying-wei Yin-yang,viscera and mind.Dormancy first appeared as a symptom. With the accumulation of doctors' clinical experience, the understanding of dormancy is deepening. In the treatment of external pathogens,“ Inner Canon of Huangdi ” put forward treatment principles.Later generations of doctors put forward more specific treatment methods based on the understanding of dormancy.Other treatment methods, such as acupuncture and moxibustion, choose heart, spleen, kidney, gallbladder and its exterior and interior meridians.Because Yinqiao and Yangqiao play an important role in sleep, the combination of Yinyang Qiao meridians and acupoints can also be used in acupuncture and moxibustion treatment.
