Objective: This study aimed to compare efficacy and complications of lumboperitoneal(LP)and ventriculoperitoneal(VP)shunt surgeries in patients with post-hemorrhagic communicating hydrocephalus. Methods: The total of 158 hospitalized patients with post-hemorrhagic communicating hydrocephalus treated with lumboperitoneal or ventriculoperitoneal shunt surgeries in Shanghai tenth people's hospital affiliated to Tongji university from February 2012 to January 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. We compare the efficacy through clinical and imaging improvements.A clinical improvement was classified as a score increase of ? 2 in patients with a Glasgow Coma Scale(GCS)score between 3 and 13 and an improvement of symptoms in patients with a GCS score between 14 and 15.A radiological improvement was classified as an Evans index(EI)< 0.3 after surgical treatment. The Safety was assessed by the incidences of hemorrhage, infection, excessive drainage, seizures, shunt obstruction and migration, revision, and mortality during the 6-month follow-up period. Conclusions: In our study,we found that LP and VP shunt surgeries showed similar effectiveness in the treatment of post-hemorrhagic communicating hydrocephalus.Secondly, fewer complications, include hemorrhage, infection, excessive drainage, seizure disorder, shunt obstruction and migration, were associated with the LP shunt than in the VP shunt. The results are more applicable to patients with moderate and severe coma.
